She giggled softly at the thought.

Jake must’ve heard, because he looked over at her and said, “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Eventful day, huh?”

“Too eventful.”

“Because of what happened today, I’m now sure of one thing in my past.”

“What’s that?”

“I don’t have any kids.”

She looked at him curiously. “How do you know that?”

“Because I wasn’t feeling the way you were feeling when Noah was missing.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not saying I wasn’t scared. But I wasn’t feeling the abject terror I saw in your eyes. It was more like I was feeling for you rather than feeling with you. It’s hard to describe, but I know that if I had children of my own, I would have felt differently.”

She nodded. “That makes sense.”

“So if I were married, why wouldn’t I have any kids by now? You would think I would, right?”

“Possibly. Or maybe it’s something else.”

“Something else?”

“You know…” She smiled.

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

Hannah wondered if she should say what she was about to say. She hardly knew Jake, so she couldn’t tell how he’d react to a little fun being poked at him. Then she decided to go for it.

“You know…” She glanced into the rearview mirror to make sure Noah was still focused on his balloon. “Low sperm count.”

He laughed and looked at her in surprise. “What?”

“You heard me.” She smiled.

He shook his head. “My sperm count is just fine, thank you.”

“How can you be sure?”

“I would know. Trust me, I’m sure.”

She giggled. “You sound a little defensive.”

“No, just stating facts.”

“Have you had it checked lately?”

He rolled his eyes. “You’re bad.”

She laughed again. “What? I meant have you gone to a doctor and had it checked?”

“Yeah, right.
